Here is my Dad getting some well deserved recognition from the Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles at one of the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners meetings. Also mentioned is my supervisor…and they also mention me as I’m popularly known around here: “Ben’s son”.
What this is about is something called “AMP” (Alternative Maritime Power), or Cold Ironing, or more accurately, shore-to-ship power. Basically, it means plugging a ship to the shore like you would plug in your toaster into a wall outlet, so that the ship runs on grid-supplied electricity rather than burning fuel in the engine. Obviously, this can only be done when the ship is parked at a port. The point of all this is to be “green” and reduce the pollution from ships around these port areas.
